Guinea leader confirms election date

President Alpha Conde has not formerly accepted his nomination

Guinea's President Alpha Condé has announced 18 October as the date for the upcoming general elections.

The electoral commission had proposed the date but the leader was yet to sign it off.

The president has however not confirmed if he would accept his nomination by the ruling party to run for a third term.

The ruling party last week nominated President Condé despite the constitution's two-term presidential limit.

"Today you have all spoken, allies, parties and others - I take note," he was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency.

The president is taking advantage of a new constitution to circumvent a two-term presidential limit.

The opposition - which boycotted a referendum in March - is likely to criticise the nomination.
