Four Mozambique policemen jailed for poll observer's murder

Anastacio Matavele, whose picture is being held by a family member, was killed in October

Four policemen in Mozambique have been given jail terms of more than 20 years each for murdering an election observer ahead of last October's election.

Anastacio Matavele was shot as he was driving in the southern city of Xai-Xai. His car was hit by 13 bullets.

The elite police were caught after their car collided with another vehicle as they fled the scene.

Activists, journalists and members of the opposition are regularly killed and abducted in Mozambique.

The cases rarely come to trial.

It's believed the perpetrators are often linked to powerful politicians.
