Facebook has launched several programmes to counter misinformation and election interference in Tanzanians ahead of the 28 October general election, Citizen newspaper reports.

The social media giant’s East and Horn of Africa policy head, Mercy Ndegwa, announced the launch of an election day reminder on Facebook and Instagram.

The feature will provide official voting information and allow Tanzanians to share their voting experience.

Ms Ndegwa is reported as saying Facebook will ensure campaign advertisements on its platforms undergo verification for transparency.

Media restrictions have increased in Tanzania since President John Magufuli, who is seeking re-election, came to power in 2015.
