Ex-Egyptian FA chairman Rida hints at 2021 AFCON postponement

Hani Abou-Rida, the Egyptian member of the FIFA executive committee

CAF Executive Committee member Hany Abo Rida has revealed that the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations is likely to be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The flagship football event on the continent was scheduled to take place on 9 January, 2021 in Cameroon.

CAF has been forced to postpone three rounds of qualifiers until further notice and that has put the tournament under threat.

Rida, former chairman of the Egyptian Football Association, spoke ahead of CAF's video conference on Tuesday, 30 June, 2020 to discuss the way forward amid the coronavirus pandemic

"All scenarios are on the table after the competition’s suspension because of the coronavirus pandemic," he told a television programme late on Saturday.

"The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon will likely be postponed, as the African national teams have not completed the rounds of the qualifiers."

Rida also revealed there is plan to play the remainder of the CAF Champions League in a tournament format.

"There is a suggestion that the remaining games of the CAF Champions League be played in a complex tournament on neutral ground," he added.
